Scottish schools award for Academy magazine
STUDENTS from Dollar Academy could see their magazine creation come to life after scooping the top award in the 2011 Scottish School Magazine Competition on Friday.
The team from the Clackmannanshire school was handed the Gold Award in the Scottish School Magazine of the Year category for their title, The Galley, at a ceremony hosted by former rugby international John Beattie.
Dollar Academy has the option of having their magazine professionally printed by Acorn Web Offset and 10 representatives from the school will be invited to join industry leaders at the Scottish Magazine Awards on November 30 as guests of PPA Scotland.
The team took top spot over second place Trinity High School and third place Coatbridge High School.
Dollar Academy also picked up awards for the best original artwork and editorial content.
Nearby Stirling High School picked up the award for Best Online Presence for its magazine The Insider.
Sandra Ewen MBE of the Scottish Government's Learning Directorate, who handed out the Gold, Silver and Bronze awards, praised the work of all the schools that took part.
She said, "The high standard of entries highlights the commitment of both pupils and teachers to the Scottish School Magazine Competition. Being involved in a school magazine contributes to the development of important skills which are all relevant to life beyond school.
"These young people have all had the opportunity to take part in a project which brought real context to their learning and allowed them to develop skills for learning, life and work. This is an example of Curriculum for Excellence in action, bringing life to learning and learning to life."
Launched in 2006, the prestigious Scottish School Magazine Competition provides secondary school students across Scotland with a unique opportunity to develop their literacy and business skills while encouraging school-leavers to consider a career in the magazine industry. The event is managed and promoted by PPA Scotland, the association for publishers of consumer, customer and business media in Scotland.
As well as being offered work experience, talks and industry tours, all category winners will receive a Quark Xpress9 desktop publishing software package worth £1,700 for use within their school and a certificate to acknowledge their achievement.
